Liliales are for the most part always rigidly upright or are spiraling herbaceous and climbing plants. Liliales are common in warm tropical areas but are found worldwide. They also include woody plants that are smaller than trees and have several main stems arising at or near the ground. Leaves are oblong and strap-like with parallel venation. There are around 1768 species in the Liliales order. There is not much data to determine the exact age of the order but are presumed to be around 100 million years old.
